The XR vanishing MonARch brings public awareness of the potential extinction of the monarch butterfly population.

Users are brought into a virtual butterfly sanctuary to learn about their migration patterns and to interact with the butterflies and making them react to their presence. Tangible objects in the shape of mason jars are brought into the virtual world, so the user can grow a virtual butterfly by placing an egg and milkweed plant, the needed elements to raise a butterfly, into the jar. When other visitors come to the environment, they can freely walk in the space and grab the real jars to interact with the virtual environment.

Demonstration of a VR environment created to enhance student understanding of the challenges faced by monarch butterflies as they make their way to Mexico in migration season. The project involves multiple technical considerations to explore ideas of mixed reality and user interaction.
